I must take a few moment to review my GAME plan.
* What resources will I need to carry out your plan?
Since I want to incorporate more technology in my lesson plans, I need to get a copy of the Ohio technology standards so I know that I am reinforcing skills my students should have and should learn.
* What additional information do I need?
I need to develop a survey tool or locate one to poll my students about their current technology use.
I also need to learn more about the Ohio technology standards.
* What steps have I been able to take so far?
My biggest frustration to going forward with my GAME plan is that as a substitute, I feel impotent! There is no regular classroom for me to grow and develop my GAME plan with students who will realize the benefits.
For my website goal: I should sit down and do some research online, particularly reviewing other history teachers' websites and starting to collect a wish list of what I would like to do with mine one day.
For my techology/history lesson plan goal: I can peruse the Ohio technology standards. I found them online and printed a hard copy to mark up. Once I familiarize myself with this content, I can think about how they might fit into my existing lessons and/or develop new lessons which incorporate the technology with the history content.
Hey! That might actually be a bonus! As a new teacher, I don't have to reinvent the wheel by dismantling and reconstructing established lessons. Building them from scratch using the technology makes more sense.

ReplyDeleteThere is a substitute policy here that says that students can't access technology when a sub is in the room. Is there a policy like that where you are? That could be a major road-block for you.
However, on the bright side, some things, technology wise, are available on the internet and can be used anywhere whether you are a regular classroom teacher or not. Polldaddy.com can be used to give students surveys. Also, you can access Quia from the internet and it allows you to make tests, games, flash cards, and other engaging activities to be used from anywhere - you just need a url.

ReplyDeleteGood grief! No tech with a sub?! No, thank goodness, none of the districts I work with have a policy that limits access with me in the room. I am sort of a regular so teachers frequently leave me a login and password to access their personal files. While being a sub is not my first choice, being a sub in demand is good for my confidence. I am actually being exposed to a lot of different tools on my travels and getting good ideas for how to incorporate strategies down the road.
I love the Polldaddy site. It might not be a bad idea for me to develop a survey instrument that I can invite students, across multiple districts, to respond to just for a baseline informal result. I will look at the Quia site and see if I can make use of it as a backup plan for those occasions when the classroom teacher is out unexpectedly and I have to improvise.

ReplyDeleteAs a fellow substitute, I can relate to your feelings of frustration. All of my ideas sound great on paper, but I have no where to actually try them out.
Reading Rosa comments, I was relieved that my district does not have a "no tech" policy like that either. I can't imagine! Teachers frequently leave assignments for the kids to do on the computer. I have even had teachers leave me sub plans saying to have the students check their e-mail for the day's assignment.
I thought it was good that you talked about checking the state technology standards. I had not really thought about this, but it is important!

ReplyDeleteI think your idea of surveying the students is a great one. Are you looking for a permanent classroom position? Maybe you could use some of your surveys, standards, and ideas to enhance your portfolio. I am also thinking of developing a website to open communication with parents. One idea I have for my site that you could consider is a calendar where parents can check on upcoming assemblies, assessments, field trips, and other special events that are happening in the classroom. This will help develop dialog between school and home, and parents and students. I would be interested in what plans you have for your site as well. Good Luck!
